A fellow student mentioned: “You can treat diseases, but how do you diagnose them? How can we prevent diseases before they occur?”

Drawing from the experience of our teachers and my own insights, I have summarized four main standards for self-health assessment. Here are the standards for your self-examination:

1. Sleep

In a normal state, one should sleep through the night until morning. If you have difficulty falling asleep at a fixed time at night, it requires attention. Based on the time, you can determine which meridian is flowing and which organ is involved.

2. Bowel Movements and Urination

  • Bowel Movements: It’s best to have a bowel movement in the morning after waking up. If not, it’s better to correct the timing. Morning bowel movements align with the natural rhythm of the Large Intestine meridian (3-5 AM), when Qi and blood are most vigorous, and help expel toxins and waste from the body. It can also provide a preliminary assessment of gastrointestinal health. For example, loose stools may indicate spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, and foul odor may be related to internal damp-heat.
  • Urination: The frequency should be moderate (5-7 times), with moderate volume and pale yellow clear urine, indicating normal water metabolism in the body, without excessive damp-heat or cold evil retention.

3. Warm Hands and Feet

This is unrelated to the season and should maintain a normal state, indicating sufficient Qi and blood, and good circulation.

The hands are related to the heart function, and cold hands may indicate a weak heart. The feet are associated with small intestine absorption function or kidney yang deficiency. However, exclude cases where cold sensations are caused by improper clothing or an excessively cold environment.

4. Diet

After eating an appropriate amount, there should be a feeling of fullness, as well as hunger. There should be thirst, and drinking will lead to satiety, indicating a balanced water metabolism in the body, without obvious symptoms of yin deficiency or yang deficiency.

By paying attention to these details in daily life and taking appropriate adjustment measures, you can effectively prevent the occurrence of diseases and achieve the goal of “treating diseases before they occur.” At the same time, individual differences and holistic concepts should also be noted, and adjustments should be flexible based on one’s actual situation. Finally, I wish everyone good health.
